If you really want to do yourself a favor and eliminate any number of future issues, you should uninstall Norton, then re-install it without any email scanning components, Norton's email scanner is notorious for going rogue and doing considerable damage to the email it's supposed to be protecting.
It wastes time, is entirely redundant, and provides zero additional protection over and above he resident file system. The following is a Norton Support FAQ item: Frequently asked questions about Norton AntiVirus Email Scanning Q - Is my computer still protected against viruses if I disable Email Scanning? A- Disabling Email Scanning does not leave you unprotected against viruses that are distributed as email attachments. Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect scans incoming files as they are saved to your hard drive, including email and email attachments. Email Scanning is just another layer on top of this. To make sure that Auto-Protect is providing the maximum protection, keep Auto-Protect enabled and run LiveUpdate regularly to ensure that you have the most recent virus definitions.

A question about something you wrote: >then re-install it without any email scanning components, Is it really possible to re-install Norton Internet Security (NIS) 21.1.1.7 without email scanning? Or do you mean to install NIS and disable the email scanning feature? I assume you mean the latter.
Regarding disabling email and anti-spam scanning: I do this currently by going into Settings ->Network ->Message Protection and switching OFF email scanning and anti-spam filter and making these changes permanent. Is this sufficient? Or do I need to do more? One other question: when I make these changes NIS continuously complains that my email is not being scanned for 'nasties'. This appears on the main screen. Is there a way to disable this message?

I just upgraded my Norton Internet Security (NIS) to version 21.1.1.7. Are there any NIS settings I need to adjust in order for NIS to play nice with Outlook 2007?
I access my online GMAIL email accounts via Comcast high-speed Internet. This has been working fine for years with the earlier version of NIS. Pete Hello, There are no problems with NIS 21.1 and Outlook. Also, you do not need to manually change the settings. In this case, you would select to install everything BUT the email scanning parts. Disabling Norton's email scanner has historically not helped; in spite of the fact that it indicates it's not running, it still is. The rest of the article can be found here: In a nutshell, email scanning is redundant because of the way email works.
ANYTHING and EVERYTHING that is sent through email MUST be composed of printable characters. Any form of executable code MUST contain non-printable, binary characters; pictures work this way, too. So we have a dilemma when it comes to attachments; we need to be able to send them, but we cannot when they're in their original, binary form. The solution is to encode the binary characters with printable characters so we can send the attachment, then decode the printable characters back into the binary form they started with, since the printable characters cannot execute or be viewed as a picture. This is what happens when we open an attachment - the email program grabs the block of printable characters, starts decoding them, and writing them to a temporary file on the hard disk. The instant this process begins, the resident file system scanner becomes intimately involved and watches each and every character as it's being written.
If the attachment is malware, the instant the scanner identifies it, it grabs the file and either quarantines or deletes it. In short, so long as you keep your virus definitions up to date, the resident file system scanner will FULLY protect your email, no email scanner required.
